Sad Stories

At the 26th floor, Bill stopped telling jokes & Jim began to sing. At the 51st floor Jim stopped singing & Scott began to tell sad stories.

Rooster Race

An old rooster sees a young one strutting around and he gets a little worried. So, they're trying to replace me, thinks the old rooster. I've got to do something about this. He walks up to the new bird and says, "So, you're the new guy in town. I bet you really think you're hot stuff don't you? I'm not exactly ready for the chopping block yet. I bet I'm still the better bird. And to prove it, I challenge you to a race around that hen house over there. We'll run around it ten times and whoever finish's first gets to have all the hens for himself."

Well, the young rooster was a proud sort, and he definitely thought he was more than a match for the old guy. You're on," said the young rooster. "And since I know I'm so great, I'll even give you a head start of half a lap."

"I'll still win easily," said the young cocky rooster.

So, the two roosters go over to the hen house to start the race and all the hens gather around to watch. The race begins and all the hens start cheering the roosters on.

After the first lap, the old rooster is still maintaining his lead. After the second lap, the old guys lead has slipped a little but he's still hanging in there. Unfortunately the old roosters lead continued to slip each time around, and by the fifth lap he just barely led the young rooster. By then, the farmer has heard all the commotion. He ran into the house, got his shotgun, and ran out to the barn yard, figuring a fox or something was after his chickens. When he got there, he saw the two roosters running around the hen house, with the old rooster still slightly in the lead. He immediately took his shotgun, aimed, fired, and blew the young rooster away. He walked away slowly, saying to himself.........

"That's the third gay rooster I've bought this month."

College Test

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a test.

I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

Absolutely, said the professor. In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

O verbo ter do português é largamente usado, aparecendo muito em expressões do nosso cotidiano e assumindo freqüentemente um papel idiomático. O verbo to have, que seria seu correspondente em inglês, tem um uso mais restrito, não aparecendo muito em formas idiomáticas. O verbo to be, por outro lado, cobre em inglês uma grande área de significado, aparecendo em muitas expressões do dia a dia, de forma semelhante ao verbo ter do português. Portanto, muitas vezes ter corresponde a to be, conforme os seguintes exemplos:

Mini-teste: Collocations

Have you ever noticed how native English speakers use a host of other words where Brazilians use “very”? The word “very” is a general-purpose intensifier, but it shouldn’t be used in every case. Often there are other words that are more appropriate as intensifiers. These strong word associations are called “collocations”. For example, we can say that someone is “very” rich, or we can say that someone is “filthy” rich. In both cases the idea is the same (very rich). However, we can’t use “filthy” and “very” interchangeably; you can’t be “filthy” poor or “filthy” hungry. ‘Filthy’ and ‘rich’ naturally go together and form a strong collocation. Knowing and using these frequent and strong collocations is an important step forward in really using the language like a native English speaker.

Puzzle

Three blondes walk into a bar and ask the bartender for three shots of tequila. He looks at them and says "OK" and pours their shots.

O estudo da morfologia, ou seja, da formação de palavras, serve para demonstrar a flexibilidade da língua, flexibilidade esta que permite ao falante nativo transferir palavras de uma categoria a outra, através da adição de afixos.

Infelizmente, regras de formação de palavras não se aplicam a todas as palavras, tendo na verdade uma aplicação, ou uma "produtividade" muito limitada. Ou seja, a regra só se aplica àquelas palavras já consagradas pelo uso na língua. Do ponto de vista daquele que aprende inglês, a regra ajuda apenas no reconhecimento das palavras, não na produção. Portanto, de pouco adianta aprender a regra para poder aplicá-la na formação de palavras. O que também, mais uma vez, demonstra a eficácia superior da assimilação natural (acquisition) sobre estudo formal (learning) no processo de aprendizado de línguas.

A utilidade de se conhecer as principais regras de formação de palavras, do ponto de vista daquele que está desenvolvendo familiaridade com inglês, está no fato de que este conhecimento permite a identificação da provável categoria gramatical mesmo quando não se conhece a palavra no seu significado, o que é de grande utilidade na interpretação de textos.

São 3 os processos de formação de palavras:

AFFIXATION: É a adição de prefixos e sufixos.
Ex: pleasant - unpleasant, meaning - meaningful - meaningless.

CONVERSION: É a adoção da palavra em outra categoria gramatical sem qualquer transformação.
Ex: drive (verbo) - drive (substantivo)

COMPOUNDING: Refere-se à junção de duas palavras para formar uma terceira.
Ex: tea + pot = teapot, arm + chair = armchair

Parrots

A parrot fancier entered a London pet shop noticed a particularly colorful bird and asked its price.

"Five thousand pounds," the shop owner replied.
