FORMAÇÃO DO ADVÉRBIO
1 - Os advérbios ingleses, em sua grande maioria, são formados pelo acréscimo do sufixo - ly a adjetivos:
Brave, bravo bravely, bravamente
Certain, certo certainly, certamente

2 - Vários advérbios são formados pelo acréscimo de ly a substantivos designativos de período de tempo e aos substantivos body,name e part:
monthly, mensalmente
weekly, semanalmente
yearly, anualmente
bodily, corporalmente,
namely, nomeadamente,
partly, parcialmente.

3 - O sufixo ly pode ser acrescentado a partícipios, especialmente em linguagem literária para formar advérbios, como:

4 - Alguns advérbios provêm de antigos genitivos como:

5 - Os sufixos wise e ward, que exprimem, respectivamente, modo e direção, também formam alguns advérbios, como:

7 - Quando o adjetivo termina em ly, como em homely (simples), lively (vivo), manly (varonil), fatherly (paternal), o sentido adverbial correspondente é geralmente expresso por uma locução ou por um advérbio de sentido equivalente como:
in a homely way, de maneira simples
in a lively manner, de modo vivo, vivamente
in a fatherly manner, de maneira paternal

8 - Algumas palavras são usadas, embora sem mudança de forma, como preposições e como advérbios:

9 - Há advérbios derivados de pronomes, como:

13 - Alguns advérbios têm duas formas uma das quais igual à adjetiva:

14 - Há, também, adjetivos com duas formas diferentes, uma das quais igual à adverbial:

15 - Depois de verbos de sensação, como: see, hear, smell, taste, sound, etc., algumas formas adjetivas são usadas em função adverbial:

COMPARAÇÃO DE ADVÉRBIOS
1 - Os advérbios ingleses de mais de uma sílaba formam o comparativo e o superlativo por meio de more e most, como:

2 - Advérbios monossilábicos, de forma idêntica à dos adjetivos correspondentes, formam o comparativo e o superlativo em - er e -est, como:

3 - Certos advérbios formam o comparativo e o superlativo irregularmente:

OBSERVAÇÃO: A clean , cleanly (limpo), correspondem duas formas adverbiais - clean e cleanly. |
OBSERVAÇÃO: A forma adverbial em ly tem, em certos casos, significado diferente: He works hard (ele trabalha arduamente). We works hardly see him (mal podíamos vê-lo). |
OBSERVAÇÕES: 1. Adjetivos em ll perdem um l antes do sufixo adverbial ly: Dull, monótono dully, monotonamente Full, cheio, completo fully, completamente 2. Adjetivos em le após consoante contraem-se: Simple, simples simply, simplesmente Terrible, terrível terribly, terrivelmente 3. Adjetivos de mais de uma sílaba, terminados em y, mudam o y em i e recebem ly: Heavy, pesado heavily, pesadamente Merry, alegre merrily, alegremente 4. Adjetivos monossilábicos em y geralmente o conservam: Shy, tímido, acanhado shyly, timidamente Dry, seco dryly, secamente 5. De day, dia e gay, alegre, formam-se os advérbios daily e gaily. |
